Isabella Monticelli-McTierny:
After working in Fashion for the last two years post studying Fashion Design at Central St Martins, Bella left
London to work on the Film adaptation of J.M. Coetzee’s “Disgrace” in the wilderness of South Africa.
Working as the on set photographer capturing the scenes of Coetzee’s greatest novel about post apartheid
South Africa. The crew were based in a refuge for homeless people for a month in Africa’s largest township
Kayelitsha. Between working she gathered stories and talked to the people of the camp taking pictures along
the way. This became the basis for all the drawings for the show. Each represents the children and the
women she met. In return for their stories she provided art supplies for the children and taught many of them
to draw. Each piece represents one of the insights into the daily realities that they are faced with. If you
would like any more information on how to help the refuge please ask the artist and she will forward you all
the details as there is still no website for this amazing organisation which helps people get back on their feet
in a place were god forgot.
